Cyber Monday 2009 — For many shoppers, Monday marked the day they said goodbye to crowded malls and hello to the Internet.

American-Girl-Cyber-Monday-image-219Across the U.S., people surfed for Cyber Monday shopping deals and retailers hope to extend an important weekend for their bottom lines.

Online shopping since Thursday is up 11 percent, and retailers hope that fresh deals on Monday will build on that and pump some life into the economy.

“Cyber Monday is a busy, busy day. I mean, it rivals Black Friday,” said Craig Berman, vice president of Amazon Global Communications.

The National Retail Federation said 9 out of 10 retailers are offering specific deals just for Cyber Monday, a 5 percent increase from one year ago.

“For the retailers who are trying to get as many sales this holiday season, they really don’t care where you shop, they just want you to shop with them,” said Ellen Davis of the National Retail Federation.

Google’s head of retail said searches show people are searching for netbooks, e-readers, smart phones and the season’s hottest toy: Zhu Zhu Pets.

“We’re seeing 70, 75 percent spikes week over week just in Zhu Zhu Pets,” said John McAteer, Google’s head of retail.

Searches for men’s gifts are outpacing women’s three to one.

Shoppers can start by looking on cybermonday.com where there are links to hundreds of retailers. It also offers rebate dollars by clicking to stores through the Cyber Monday site.
