Ptyalism — This is the condition in which excess of saliva is produced.

This condition along with the condition of morning sickness and nausea is present till the 12 weeks of pregnancy is completed. These three conditions are common signs of early pregnancy.

The causes of excessive saliva during pregnancy includes:

  • Excessive saliva is found due to the hormonal changes in the body but it is not liable to all the women. Some women can face this condition even during their periods due to the fluctuations in their hormones during the pregnancy period.
  • Excessive saliva formation can be a result a heart burn. Actually, the acidic contents of the stomach back up and irritate the contents of the esophagus which causes burning sensation. In your esophagus are present the salivary sensors which activate them to produce more saliva to prevent this heart burn in the esophagus.
  • Nausea is seen as one cause for excessive saliva. This happens because excessive saliva prevents the saliva from swallowing in. Actually, the glands of saliva in the mouth produces one quart of saliva each day. Most of this quantity produced is swallowed in consciously. In case, you are feeling its presence still in the mouth shows that the quantity which was usually swallowed down has reduced which has resulted in its accumulation in the mouth itself.
