Port-au-Prince – As Haiti continued to suffer from the effects of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake last week, its citizens were again gripped by terror as a 5.9 magnitude aftershock hit the nation on Wednesday morning.
The aftershock occurred just after six in the morning and appeared to have caused very little damage to both life and property. It hit about 35 miles off the capital city of Port-au-Prince, where relief efforts continue and some signs of recovery are being observed, however minimal at the moment.
Despite the limited effects of the aftershock, people understandably reacted with terror at the latest quake. Survivors now living in tent camps tried to get out in the open, fearing the worst. They were joined there by some rescue workers and even soldiers. There were survivors however, who simply froze in fear and could not go out into the open.
There is a continuous exodus of people from the capital, which was not a by-product of the aftershock as it has been going on for days now. Haitians seem to simply want to get out of Port-au-Prince. They are mostly heading to the surrounding countryside where they could only hope that the conditions are a whole better than the one they left behind. Already the swelling number of people escaping the city has caused worries that the areas where they have gone to might not be equipped to handle them.
