Australian Open 2010 — After deteriorating Blake, it’s time for Del Potro vs Mayer.

2009 US Open Champion Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina barely avoided being upset by a deteriorating American, James Blake on the second round of the Australian Open 2010. The battle between the world’s No.4 and 45 (and declining) lasted four hours and 17 minutes, in what became a nail-biting five-setter. In the end, the Argentine escaped Hisense Arena with just an early second round scare by a final score of: 6-4, 6-7, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.

“I really showed the crowd, the people were so excited all the time. We played a very good match,” del Potro said. “Blake was fast. He played very strong with his forehand. He never missed easy points, easy forehand. I was trying every game with my serve. Then when I had the opportunity to break his serve, sometimes I did, sometimes not. It’s very difficult to keep trying, keep going. You have to be focused every point, every time, and try to take your chance. I had my chance in the last set.”

Juan Martin de Potro [-1500 ML] will now face underdog Florian Mayer [+800 ML] of Germany, as seventh seeded Andy Roddick will likely await him in the next Australian Open 2010 round. Del Potro and Mayer are expected to meet tonight at 10:30 PM ET (7:30 PM PT) live from Rod Laver Arena on ESPN-2’s continuing coverage of the Australian Open 2010.

One has to believe that after such an exasperating second round match, Del Potro will likely have to receive some treatment on his injured wrist. “Yes, (pain) a little bit, but I can play,” Del Potro added. “I think I have many good things right for the next match.”

I know a lot are following these fights, with the amazing fights of 107, everyone must be excited for 108.

I’m so pumped for Rashad’s fight vs Thiago. Rashad hasn’t really proved himself, He knocked out Liddel and Griffin with lucky counters, but Thiago is an absolute psycho and I believe will thrash him and knock Rashad WAY out of contention for any belt championship.

His fight vs. Machida was VERY lame, both fighters IMO don’t deserve that Light Heavyweight title. I’m just waiting for the next contender to knock Machida the fuck out, then the L.Heavy division can get rolling again.

Spurs are undefeated in their last 3 matches but will have been disappointed to only pick up a point against Fulham 2 days ago. With West Ham having only won 4 matches in the 2009 season, Tottenham will be confident of a win here and a chance to slip into 4th place. These two sides last came face to face in August, where Spurs had to overturn a 1-0 lead by WHU to end the match 2-1 thanks to goals from Defoe and Lennon. The home side will give a start to Ledley King while also including Bassong in their plans. A head injury against Fulham 2 days ago looked like it may keep the French defender out of this one, however a place in the starting line-up now looks promising. Luka Modric will be aiming to get a start in this one while Defoe will be back in the side after missing out in the weekend’s action.

Mark Noble will be absent due to a hamstring pull meaning a chance for either Behrami or Jimenez in his place. The Hammers travel to White Hart Lane without the services of Gabbidon, Dyer and Cole. It’s 10 years since West Ham utd registered a win at White Hart Lane, however with 3 points bagged at the weekend, if confidence is running high in the Hammers camp, Spurs may face a tough test to take all 3 points.

I feel as if this is going to be a great fight. My prediction is that Penn beats Sanchez, its going to be tough though. I see Penn being motivated for this fight because Sanchez reminds Penn of himself early on. Sanchez was impressive against Guida, but Guida controlled him for a good portion of the fight. Match will be held December 12, 2009 at FedExForum, Memphis, Tennessee.

I say Penn submits Sanchez in the 3rd round. We’ll have to check it out once we get to check out UFC 107 live stream.
