Superman Soars to New Heights with Record Comic Book Price

Tags: , , ,

Superman – A rare copy of Action Comics no. 1, the very first comic book which featured Superman, was sold online earlier this week for a staggering price of $1.5 million, shattering the previous record.

The copy was purchased from ComicConnect.com, an online auction site operating out of Manhattan by a buyer who chose not to be identified. Remarkably, the sale was completed within two minutes after the prized comic book was put up for sale.

Earlier in the year, a copy of the same issue changed hands for $1 million, setting the then-record price. But in a matter of a few days, the record was re-set by a fellow super-hero, as a copy of Batman’s first appearance was sold for around $1.08 million.

A primary reason for the book fetching such a high price was its excellent condition compared with other copies or similar books from the same era. It was published in 1938, 72 years ago, during what was known as the “golden age” of comic books.

Another reason that is considered the most sought-after comic issue in history is its historical and perhaps cultural, significance. Superman was the very first “super-hero”, and was the template for all other similar characters that followed. His appearance heralded a new age and birthed an entire new genre of adventure stories in comic books, which has grown in popularity and significance over the years.
