Wisconsin Struggles with 8.7% Unemployment

Wisconsin Unemployment – About a hundred thousand working people are set to lose their unemployment benefits come spring.

According to the Department of Workforce Development, those people will probably lose their job benefits six weeks sooner than expected.

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development said they won’t release any labor market information for the months of January until March. That’s because the current unemployment rate dipped below 8.5 percent for its three-month average in January to 8.3 percent.

“Do we want to see unemployment high in our state?  No, we want to see it going down,” said Sec. of Workforce Development Roberta Gassman.  “Unfortunately, some of our citizens will not be eligible for that unemployment insurance benefit.”

On the lighter note, the Congress is now doing their part to passing the legislation in order to extend the benefits. However, those 100,000 people still would not be eligible to apply because of the unemployment rate.

Thus, for the 100,000 Wisconsin citizens to see those extra six weeks of checks, Congress would have to act separately to modify its 8.5 cut-off rate, or Wisconsin’s rate would need to climb above 8.5 percent.
